Biography
Hassan Sadiq (also spelled Hasan Sadiq) is a veteran Pakistani noha khwan, a reciter of the elegiac poetry recited by Shia Muslims to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala. Based in Faisalabad in Pakistan's Punjab province, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of recorded noha khawani and has remained a leading voice in the genre for more than four decades.
He began his career in the family tradition, reciting alongside his father and uncle, and gradually built a following that spread across Pakistan and among Shia communities abroad. Over his long career he is said to have recited close to ten thousand nohas, qasidas and dhamals, a body of work that admirers cite as among the largest of any reciter in the history of noha khawani.
Sadiq is known for a distinctive reciting style, including his use of the "dohra" (a couplet-based introductory verse recited before the main noha) to set the mood of a majlis. His voice and phrasing have made many of his compositions standards that are echoed by mourners in azadari gatherings and processions each year.
Like most established noha khwans, he releases a fresh album of nohas every year for the mourning months of Muharram and Safar, timed to the Islamic calendar. These annual collections, distributed through audio platforms and his YouTube channel, form the backbone of his output and are keenly awaited by the azadari community ahead of each Muharram season.
His recitations cover the central themes of the Karbala tragedy, from the thirst and sacrifice of Imam Hussain to the grief of Bibi Zainab, and are recited in Urdu as well as regional languages such as Sindhi and Punjabi. Alongside mournful nohas he also performs manqabat and qasida in praise of the Ahl al-Bayt.
Sadiq's influence extends into a new generation: his son Raza Hassan Sadiq and other younger reciters connected to him have continued the tradition, and he is credited with inspiring and guiding many students of noha khawani. He remains active through his official YouTube channel and audio platforms, where he continues to release new material for each mourning season.
