Biography

Early Life

Born on 19 September 1948 in Gopalpur, Siwan District, Bihar, India. He lost his father, Syed Mazhar Hussain Rizvi, at the age of three and was raised by his mother.

Syed Ali Akhtar Rizvi (1948-2002), known by his poetic name Sha'oor Gopalpuri and honoured with the title Adeeb-e-Asr, was an Indian Twelver Shia scholar, public speaker, translator, historian and poet. He was born in Gopalpur, Siwan District, in the state of Bihar, India, and lost his father in early childhood, being raised by his mother. Rizvi devoted much of his scholarly career to translation and religious literature. He translated numerous works from Arabic and Persian into Urdu, most notably rendering the eleven-volume Al-Ghadir into Urdu at the request of Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, with the first volume appearing in 1991. During a visit to Iran in 1990 he received the title Adeeb-e-Asr ('Writer of the Era') from Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi. Beyond translation, he authored original religious works and poetry collections, including salaam, nauha and ghazal collections, and was recognised for his contributions to Shia scholarship and Urdu religious literature in India. He died on 10 February 2002 in his native Gopalpur.

Books & Works

Best known for his Urdu translation of the 11-volume Al-Ghadir, undertaken at the request of Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi (first volume published 1991). Also authored religious and poetic works under the pen name 'Sha'oor Gopalpuri'.
