Biography
Early Life
He lived in Delhi during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He trained in Unani (Greco-Islamic) medicine as a disciple of Hakim Sharif Khan, and studied religious sciences under scholars including Meer Shams al-Deen Faqeer and Maulana Syed Raham Ali.
Hakim, Shia scholar and author (Shahid Rabay - The Fourth Martyr)
Hakim Mirza Muhammad Kamil Dehlavi was a Twelver Shia scholar, author and practitioner of Unani medicine in Delhi during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He is remembered by the honorific Shahid Rabay, 'the Fourth Martyr', among the Shia community of Delhi.
He is best known for his book Nuzhat-e-Isna Ashariya, a detailed response written to defend Twelver Shia belief against Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlavi's well-known polemic Tuhfa Ithna Ashari. According to traditional accounts, it was on account of this work that he was poisoned by the Sunni Nawab of Jhajjar. He is reported to have authored more than sixty books across dialectics, jurisprudence, hadith and philosophy, including Hall al-Tashkikat (1804) and Elm-e-Qawafee.
He studied medicine as a disciple of Hakim Sharif Khan and religious sciences under teachers such as Meer Shams al-Deen Faqeer and Maulana Syed Raham Ali. He is buried at the Panja Sharif shrine near Kashmiri Gate in Delhi, and the Delhi Shia Waqf Board is reported to hold annual majalis in his memory.
