Biography

Early Life

Born on 22 June 1939 in Lucknow, United Provinces, British India, into the prominent Ijtihadi Naqvi scholarly family of Lucknow. He was the son of Maulana Kalbe Husain and younger brother of the scholar Kalbe Abid. He received his early religious education at the traditional Lucknow madrasas Sultan-ul-Madaris and Nazmia.

Maulana Dr. Syed Kalbe Sadiq (22 June 1939 – 24 November 2020) was one of the most respected Shia Muslim scholars of modern India. Born in Lucknow into the renowned Naqvi family of Ijtihadi scholars, he was the son of Maulana Kalbe Husain and the younger brother of Maulana Kalbe Abid. He was widely known by the honorific titles Mufakkir-e-Islam (Thinker of Islam) and Hakeem-ul-Ummat. After a traditional religious education at the Lucknow seminaries Sultan-ul-Madaris and Nazmia, he pursued modern higher education, earning a Ph.D. in Arabic Literature with a gold medal from Aligarh Muslim University in 1971. This combination of classical hawza learning and modern scholarship shaped his lifelong conviction that education was the key to lifting the Indian Muslim community out of backwardness. Kalbe Sadiq devoted much of his life to educational and social reform. On 18 April 1984 he established the Tauheedul Muslimeen Trust to provide scholarships and schooling to poor students regardless of community, and he founded institutions including Unity College in Lucknow. For this work he was often described as 'India's second Sir Syed', after the nineteenth-century reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. He also served as President of the Era's Lucknow Medical College & Hospital. He was a prominent religious and public figure, serving for many years as a Vice-President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and as General Secretary of the All India Shia Conference. From these platforms he was a consistent advocate of communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims and of unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims, frequently counselling restraint and dialogue during periods of tension. As an orator he delivered majalis and lectures across India and internationally, addressing themes of Karbala, the importance of knowledge (ilm), morality and social responsibility in an accessible, reformist style. His speeches on Imam Husayn and on the pursuit of education remain widely circulated. Kalbe Sadiq died on 24 November 2020 in Lucknow at the age of 81, after a prolonged battle with colorectal cancer complicated by pneumonia. He was buried in Lucknow. In 2021 the Government of India posthumously conferred on him the Padma Bhushan, the nation's third-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contributions to education and public life.
